Schools Lead the Way: From Phone Distractions to Focus
A Community Conversation on Managing Cell Phone Use in Schools
How do we help students stay focused and supported in a world full of screen-time distractions? That question launched the Looking Up series, a new platform for thoughtful community dialogue on the mental health challenges young people face today. Social media and smartphone use have become a public health concern. Excessive screen time has been linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and attention issues among young people. For many students, it’s not just a distraction, it’s a barrier to focus, learning, and mental well-being.
1 in 4 students
spends more than 2 hours on their phone during the school day, undermining grades and emotional health.
Teens receive an average of 240 app notifications daily
with 1 in 4 arriving during school hours.
Our first event brought together educators, parents, students, mental health professionals, and policymakers to explore how schools can better manage cell phone use in support of student well-being.
Through lively panel discussions and powerful personal stories, the event dove into:
How screen time affects student focus, mental health, and academic success
What happens when schools implement phone bans—straight from those living it every day
Upcoming policy changes and what they could mean for school communities
This was more than just a panel—it was a real conversation across roles and experiences. From parents navigating tech at home, to teachers working on classroom solutions, to students and mental health professionals sharing their day-to-day realities, everyone brought something meaningful to the table.
